Uh now let's talk about uh I think the thing that maybe most people know you for because it is a little bit more uh public you don't have to travel anywhere to see it and see you is the sole selector show on uh eighty-eight one K DHS I've never heard a guy have more fun doing what he's doing on the radio than that that soul selected show on Mondays. Well, you know I've heard DJ's in Saint Louis on the air that I always thought that uh you know one of one of my uh elders uh Lou FA the times just had this commanding presence and he had little uh comic routines that he went through and uh you know what I find it ironic that terrestrial radio today.

That the way commercial radio has evolved is that you no longer really have personalities you have this sort of interchangeable somewhat uh anonymous or uh generic voices that they can use in twelve different markets and they have been in their local market and the only the closest thing you've got the personality radio now.

The raving you hear on uh political talk shows. You know people always ask me, you know back in the day of radio like when I first got into radio um there was this gigantic wall of records and I mean vinyl records you know, and there were some new songs that came out that we had to play or or or songs from an album uh but then other than that whatever it is, you wanna play you know just keep people entertained keep on listening and keep them happy and that's what we did and then it just evolved into um you know records to CDs and that was fine and I worked at a.

He was runaway um and then it got into uh the computer would play the commercials so we don't have to use carts anymore. I mean you're you've been. I'm not calling you all the time, but you remember the days of carts right um and then uh the the computer to play the commercials and then it got to point well, let's just put the music on the commercials and then it got to a point that well, why do we need a guy here?

If the if the computers is gonna play the station all night, but there was something cool about you know 2 o'clock in the morning and here in radio on the air, you know finishing up his show with that, you know, I always talk really smooth and soft and stuff and you know it's something happens overnight. Here's here's the the perfect example of how my own medium disappointing me and it was the day that Michael Jackson died cuz when John Lennon died in New York every DJ.

I listened to went to this went to the station and they told stories and the music was Wall-to-wall. Beatles and John Lennon music. I mean, literally nothing and I said, Oh, that's right. There's nobody there well in the result of that in the outcome of that is radio, not doing one of the greatest things it does, which is to create.

A sense of community uh some of my favorite DJ's on as far as radio uh country I've gone to for many years for reasons of business and recreation is Jamaica and I love the DJs on the radio there.

Is listening to him at that moment and that you know he's talking to and gathering up the community together I really think that's uh one of the things that radio can do, especially as a live medium and that's so sadly missing I think I think that the key word that you use in that whole so right there.

Tom was inclusion and you know when people are on their lives and you know asking. To call in or come to the station, if if something happened, if it's a fund raiser or something like that to uh to be included and uh uh and and it's the radio Tom inclusion everywhere.

Uh and and you know it stretches another things I mean, um remember the total sense of uh gathered community feeling lost uh when uh Jacky died.

Yeah um think of uh I think of the fact that when uh. Rod King doctor Jack and Stein passed I have the park six blocks from the high school uh you know Jim Room in East Saint Louis, where there was just an enormous line outside waiting to get in to file past his casket and pay their respects and that is is is a tribute. To the way local radio and and and DJ's that are plugged in to their community have that relationship. It's very special. Uh I think it's uh approaches being a sacred relationship and uh I'm I'm very proud of the fact that uh you know, I'll put it this way.

I can think of two different times in Saint Louis that I was pulled over for speeding. And I rolled down the window and within 60 seconds the goes uh wait a minute.

Are you oh no? I'm gonna call you Monday. How can you? That's I will admit that that's happened to me. Uh in line to get a beer, whatever and I'm talking to a guy I was with and the guy behind me, says. Are you are you? Of course? Yeah, How would you know that he's not gonna recognize your voice? So it's weird that for a long time, we are just a voice and not a face and and I think that's kinda cool. Because we are because we are given the privilege of playing music once more, I was listening to that favorite DJ of mine in Jamaica Barry Barry was on the air and there's always turmoil going on in Jamaica and he's got some music playing underneath him and he goes.

Jamaica safe that's funny because while. Government of the day is trying to figure out problems of economics and unemployment. Barry has the mind well spent Jamaican man standing on the corner listening to the music.

I'm playing because if the music wasn't playing in Jamaica, then he drops the music out and there's a total dead air for 5 seconds.

He brings it back on the beat and goes goodness gracious. It's true uh music is something that I think everybody in their life, no matter what that music is cuz I grew up like you time. I gotta tell you you know. You know, Ron Mundy and Dan Ingram and Harry Harrison in the mornings and uh it really truly set my life on its path because I didn't know it at the time you know that was what I wanted to do when I grow up but sure enough.

If I ever grew up if we ever grow up you get older. So Monday, social selector show when you go in there on a certain day on a Monday to do your show what is uh in your mind as far as what you're gonna do that day. Does it happen on the way in? Does it happen? I'm so old school. I bring in vinyl. Yeah, I'll bring in CD's. In fact, I'm fond of saying I'll bring in Forty-five. I'm fond of saying on the air I play LPs I play forty-fives. I hear that so uh you know uh uh and and of course I don't I never wanna be somebody on the radio as far as kinda show I do that I am honoring the dead and burying the living so I am always looking for new music. Especially out of Saint Louis uh I'll give you an example, uh we've got a real world class musician here in town in Jeremiah Johnson. Oh my god. I love him.

Lets Get To It (Swankin Club Version) - John Pagano - Lets Get To It (Vinyl) a great songwriter in fact, his new album, which I've just heard you know for a number of years in town. His new album is the best example of what I would call Southern Rock in the twenty-first century right alongside JJ Grey and right on and he's on he's on the label based in Germany they.

They do exactly what record labels used to do they support his tours. They you know, promote him and uh you know, make sure to keep his name out there uh and his uh his new album is gonna be out in October. Uh he's a great performer. Good vocalist wonderful guitar player and write songs. I mean he's everything that the new stuff that he's doing is everything that Southern Rock was supposed to be. Ah some kind of competition I don't know I don't know exactly was but there was a bunch of bands and ah he was a one who one that and represented something I wish I could remember what it was but ah two quick things come before I forget first of all I wanna ask you ah do you remember the first forty-five that you bought with your own money oh yes good love it little young rascals yeah my was confusion by the temptations I'm older than you not by I remember my first is the second one was satisfaction by the stones on the Blue London label.

Yeah, my first album was actually Abbey Road that came out when I was like ten or 11 years old. Um you know getting back to. Aah Johnson and his band when I came home that night, that's all I talked talked about to my wife was Jeremiah Johnson to the point where she was like is that your newest man crush is Jeremiah Johnson and I said, absolutely the guy just couldn't get my eyes off him. Uh you know all I want to do is see him.

I look up his Lets Get To It (Swankin Club Version) - John Pagano - Lets Get To It (Vinyl) online. The guy just has a magnetism and charisma besides the great musical talent and beyond that although he now is full-time committed to the music.

A number of you when I first met him and up to about a year and a half 2 years ago, this is a guy who is running a full-time music career having a good band behind him playing everywhere between here and the Nebraska and he's got a full-time job as a high elevation electric line.

Oh my god he's doing that Full-time. I didn't know that. It was just a point where I went damn this guy's a stud that's we don't get electrocuted up there so we can hear him uh full time now and so I think uh you know, let's make I hopefully you'll never play on a stage where it's raining right exactly right Well. Tom you Know II uh we were looking for you know people's local people cuz here's the thing too is the small business um end of things is something that we wanted to try to you know help out people with the small businesses and get them that you're vintages by.

Help uh or more exposure because it's doing pretty good but we want to let people know you're there. I mean there are people that don't know vintage vinyl exists and to get out there and look at some records flip through the records. Um I was talking to uh John Max Field who's a local musician and he said that we were talking about flipping through records at at vintage vinyl and he says yeah, when I'm flipping through looking for my records, I'm always right here.

That's kinda cool to be there those two guys uh Tom he's uh uh the social selector show Monday on KD HX and uh um vintage vinyl of course Lets Get To It (Swankin Club Version) - John Pagano - Lets Get To It (Vinyl) look for that cool special coming up on uh part two coming up on K ETC.

Is that right uh I believe well I don't know we're we're talking to them. They may be doing a an encore found out there are five stations out of town uh with PBS that want to do it and as far as. I just put it this way. Love is love and war is kind of ugly.
